Department of Bacteriology

It is the oldest Department of the Institute. The department is engaged in studies aimed at understanding the mechanisms involved in bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Bacteriology department has been involved in the isolation, identification and laboratory diagnosis (by culture, morphological, biochemical & serological methods) of the causative agents of plague, leptospirosis and Anthrax from human samples at the time of their outbreak. In future also, this department will undertake such activities whenever if the outbreak will occur.

Department of Bacteriology is currently engaged in the following testing / research projects

1.
Determination of susceptibility/resistance pattern of various antibiotics against bacterial pathogens responsible for nosocomial infection, isolated from burns ICU including animate and inanimate objects.
2.
Determination of susceptibility/resistance of some group of antifungal agents against aerobic fungal pathogen responsible for nosocomial infection, isolated from animate and inanimate objects of burns ward.
3.
Comparison of susceptibility patterns of various disinfectants & antibiotics against bacterial & fungal species.

Training: The department also imparts training in various aspects of microbiological techniques like microbiological assay of antibiotics in a given solution, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal testing methods of anti-microbial agents.
