Instrumentation Cell
 

The Instrumentation Cell was formed in 1977 for the mantainance of sophisticated electronic equipment in the institute.

The present worth of the major sophisticated instruments alone in the Institute is about Rs. 2.50 Crores. Almost all the instruments in the Institute were purchased after 1977.

The Cell carried out R & D work and developed Nerve Stimulator, Digital Stopwatch, Electronic Timer Control and further designed and fabricated a Monitor / Alarm module for a USA make CO2 Incubator at 1/3rd the cost of the original.

The activities of the Instrumentation Cell are as follows :

Carrying out in-house repairs where-ever possible.
2.
Maintaining all instruments in the Institute in working order.
3.
Plan and provide technical specifications for procurement of new equipment and instruments.

The Library
 

Haffkine Institute library is one of the oldest and biggest bio-medical research libraries in India. It has been maintained since the inception of the Institute. The library is housed in a four storied building, with a large collection of books, monographs, reports, journals, etc. in the field of Biomedicine and allied subjects with a special emphasis on communicable diseases.

Timings

The library works Monday through Friday between 9.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m., excepting public holidays.

Membership

Though its primary clientele is the staff and students of the Institute, the library from its very beginning has been made free and open to students, researchers and scholars from various colleges / universities and research organizations in Mumbai and other parts of the country.

Collection

The Library contains a versatile collection of books and journals in the fields of biomedicine and allied subjects with special reference to communicable diseases. It consists of 26,500 back volumes of scientific journals, more than 10,500 books, 4,000 micro fiches and a CD-ROM collection. The Library has a rich collection of primary and secondary sources covering the core subjects necessary for the research conducted in the organization. The collection in the library has been developed over the years with an objective to provide a good reference material.

The library receives about 100 core serials in the field of Bio-medical sciences from different corners of the world.


Services Offered

Inter-Library Loan Service: This facility is available to medical libraries in Mumbai on reciprocal basis.
2.
Reference / Referral Services: This library has developed a rich collection of Reference Books, such as Dictionaries, Directories, Encyclopaedias, Pharmacopoeias, Handbooks, Annual Reviews, various Abstracting and Indexing sources, etc. in the fields of Biomedicine and allied subjects. Readers are helped individually to find out answers to their specific reference queries. They are also explained of the specialized arrangement of certain reference sources like Biological Abstracts, Chemical Abstracts, MAPA, etc., so that they can find the information on their own.
3.
Photocopying Services: Available at a nominal fee.
