Testing
Unit
One of the prime functions of the
Institute is to conduct various tests on products
submitted by the Prohibition and Excise department
of the Government of Maharashtra, and samples
such as drugs, biologicals, food additives, disinfectants,
pesticides, cosmetics, plastics, etc.
Tests
Undertaken

1.

To carry out analysis
of Drugs & Cosmetics in accordance with
Drugs & Cosmetics Act., 1940 and Drugs
& Cosmetics rule, 1945 on behalf of the
manufacturer, when they do not have facilities
for sophisticated analysis. |

2.

To carry out analysis
of Drugs & Cosmetics referred by other
Government Departments, Public Corporate Bodies
like Municipal Corporations, Zilla Parishads
etc., to assess the quality of Drugs &
Cosmetics. |

3.
|
To analyze the Drugs
& Cosmetics sent by any other party for
assessing the quality of Drugs & Cosmetics. |
|
4.
|
To analyze the alcoholic
beverages like Indian Made Foreign liquors
(I.M.F.L.), Beer, Toddy etc. |
|
5.
|
To analyze denaturants
(such as Benzene, Acetone, Crotonaldehyde,
Diethylphalate, Ethyl Acetate, Ethyl Ether,
light Cauotchoucine, Pyridine bases, Toluene,
Diethyl amine etc.) to be added for preparing
Ordinary Denatured Spirit (O.D.S.) and Special
Denatured Spirit (S.D.S.) sent by State Excise
Department of Government of Maharashtra. |

To analyze the samples
of Special Denatured Spirit (S.D.S.), Ordinary
Denatured Spirit (O.D.S.), French polish,
Thinner and Bhang etc., sent by State Excise
Department of Government of Maharashtra. |

To extend the expertise
to State Excise Department of Maharashtra
Government in respect of above referred activities. |

The staff of the Unit
are members of the Technical Advisory Committee
on Denaturants for the State of Maharashtra. |
The testing laboratories of the
Institute carry out all regulatory tests on alcoholic
beverages, liquor, and also on narcotic substances
and denatured and ordinary spirits, French polish
etc. It also carries out regulatory tests on the
bitterents (Denatonium sachharide, Denatonium
benzoate), colorants (Crystal violet, Methylene
blue) and permitted denaturants (like Pyridine,
Crotonaldehyde, Acetaldehyde, Diethyl phthalate,
Diethyl ether, Ethyl acetate, Diethyl amine, Acetone,
Benzene and Toluene etc) to liquors, spirits and
alcohols.
This laboratory is recognized by the Food and
Drugs Administration of the Government of Maharashtra
to carry out testing of drugs and pharmaceutical
dosage forms.
The Testing Unit undertakes regulatory
testing of following products under the Excise
and Prohibition Rules, Govt. of Maharashtra:

Testing & Laboratory Services
offered:
The Unit undertakes analysis of
compounds for Carbon, Hydrogen and Nitrogen analysis,
and FT-IR analysis. The unit also offers laboratory
services for recovery of HPLC Grade solvents.
