Department of Pharmacology. Bioavailability Studies & Toxicology

Testing Activities

The department undertakes various acute toxicological tests on drugs, chemicals, cosmetics, foods and other products as per the regulatory requirements for each category of such products. The acute toxicity tests undertaken are as under:

Toxicological Tests

1.
Acute toxicity (LD50) in mice by oral and systemic routes. Acute toxicity (LD50) in rats by oral and systemic routes.

2.
Acute toxicity (LD50) of substances dissolved in water on fish.(environmental toxicity on aquatic life)

3.
Primary dermal irritation in rabbits by Draize technique on topical formulations, cosmetics and materials.

4.
Primary dermal irritation in rabbits by modified Draize technique on topical formulations, cosmetics and materials.

5.
Mucous membrane irritation effect in rabbits.

6.
Skin sensitisation effect in guinea pigs.

7.
Toxicity studies on containers used for storage of water.

Bioavailability studies

1.
Bioavailability and bioequivalence studies on pharmaceutical oral dosage forms of drugs.

2.
Bioequivalence studies on topical formulations of drugs like corticoid creams and gels.

3.
Bioavailability studies on modified-release, sustained-release and extended-release dosage forms of drugs.
