Testing and Laboratory Facilities

A) Types of Samples Tested

The Department performs various testing activities for chemical analysis, some manually and some using analytical instruments. Types of samples tested include:

  • Organic compounds synthesized in our Organic Synthesis Laboratory from various research projects (tested using FTIR, GCMS, HPLC).
  • Samples received from other academic institutes and commercial industries.
  • Snake venom samples received from the Forest and Police Departments of Maharashtra and other states.
  • Biological assays, including Antioxidant activity and Anti-inflammatory activity.

B) Instrument Facility: Analytical Instrumentation

Analytical instrumentation is pivotal to scientific investigation. At the Haffkine Institute, the Analytical Laboratory Facility is committed to:

  1. Providing accurate and precise analysis of samples at economical cost.
  2. Providing technical support for designing and completing experiments involving analytical instruments.
  3. Organizing short-term courses and workshops on the use and application of various instruments and analytical techniques.

The facility is equipped with the following instruments:

  • FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer)
  • GC (Gas Chromatography)
  • GCMS (Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrophotometer)
  • HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography)
  • Tablet Dissolution Apparatus
  • Tablet Disintegration Tester
  • Polarimeter
  • Refractometer
  • pH Meter
  • Peptide Synthesizer
  • UV Spectrophotometer

C) Laboratory Facility: Organic Synthesis Laboratory

The Organic Synthesis Laboratory focuses on research involving naturally occurring complex molecules (secondary metabolites) from plants or animals and their chemical synthesis. Research areas include:

  • Development of new reactions and methodologies for efficient synthesis of bioactive molecules.
  • Design and synthesis of molecules with unique biological activity.
  • Synthesis of heterocyclic compounds using green techniques.

Available instruments in the Organic Synthesis Laboratory include:

  • Microwave Synthesis Reactor
  • Rotary Evaporator
  • Solvent Purification System
  • Ultrasonic Bath
  • Laboratory Oven
  • Vacuum Oven
  • Analytical Balance
  • Heating Oil/Water Baths
  • Magnetic Stirrers with Heating
  • Overhead Stirrer Assembly
  • Ice Cube Machine
  • Fume Hood
  • Vacuum Pumps
