THE HAFFKINE LIBRARY:
The Haffkine Library is one of the largest and oldest medical library in the country. The Library has been maintained since the inception of the institute a century ago. During earlier times, it was housed verandah of the precious Darbar Hall of this Institute. Recognizing the importance of versatile collection and its growing phenomenon, the proposal for a new specious building for the library was approved by the Government of Maharashtra and the foundation stone for the new building was laid down by the Minister for Public Health and Medical Education Hon’ble Late Shri. Bhalchandra Anant Sawant alias Bhaisaheb Sawant on Monday the 8th February 1988. The architecture plan for this building was designed by Sir. J.J. School of Artchitecture, Mumbai. The new library building was inaugurated at the auspicious hands of the then Minister of Public Health and Medical Education, Govt. of Maharashtra Hon’ble (Mrs) Pushpatai Hire on Thursday, the 24th October 1991.
The Library of Haffkine Institute for Training, Research and Testing is a repository of information covering the discipline of infection disease, pathogenesis disease and other related subjects. It is a knowledge reservoir in the field of Bio-Medicine and allied subjects.
The main aim of the library is to caters to the information and research needs of students, faculty, researchers and scientists belonging to not only this institute, but has also been providing information services to the students, faculty and scientists of other institutes, colleges and hospitals. The library has always participated in resource sharing with libraries within and outside the city. The library is housed in a four storeyed building, with a comprehensive collection of Books, Monographs, Technical Reports and Scientific Serials published in various parts of the world. The collection focuses on subjects related to Biomedicine with a special emphasis on communicable diseases. |
